How to Measure for Curtain Poles & Tracks Curtain poles need extra width to allow for full window coverage when the curtains are open. A. Measuring Curtain Pole Width Measure the window width. Add 6-12 inches on each side so curtains can be fully drawn without blocking light. B. Measuring Curtain Pole Height Curtain rods should be placed 4-6 inches above the window for an elevated look. For extra height, position the rod closer to the ceiling (especially for rooms with high ceilings).
